Linda

The stables stank.

Linda frowned as they approached. Somewhere in the barn, a donkey brayed in irritation. The horses looked good enough to be a filling meal, but Linda was certain they’d be reprimanded for attempting such a feast.

“Stay outside,” they told Intoh. “Can’t buy horse.” The one time Intoh and Linda had attempted to buy horses, the horses refused to let Linda ride, seeing right through their illusion.

“Shouldn’t split up now. Not with cultists hunting us. Come, come,” Intoh hissed quietly.

Linda snorted in irritation as Helai rested a hand on their arm. “Intoh is right, Linda. Especially with Rooster being attacked. We should stick together.”

Helai was right, but Linda still didn’t like it, their eyes watering as the foul smell wafted through the air. It got worse as they walked into the barn, and a stable-hand approached, his face dirty and his hair drenched in sweat.

“What can I help you with?”

As the others paid for horses, Linda went over to a large cow with horns on both sides of her head. The cow stared at them blankly, and Linda reached out tentatively, wondering if the animal’s instincts would kick in and recognize Linda as a predator.

The cow snorted loudly but did not flinch away as Linda’s hand grazed the top of the cow’s head, and Linda felt themself soften. They did not wish to eat this one. The animal was not intelligent, not in the way Linda and the other Misfits were, but there was a quiet kindness in the cow’s eyes that Linda felt drawn to.

“Lookin’ to buy Karen?”

Linda turned and shook their head at the stable-hand. “No skaels,” they said sadly. “Next time.”

“She ain’t good for travelers like you anyway,” the stablehand said. “Not unless you have a cart that needs pullin’ or a field that needs tendin’.” Looking at the others, he gestured for them to follow. “I have just the animals for you all.”
